An Act Of (Fun) Vengeance
X-MEN #20 SPOILERS INSIDE DO NOT OPEN IF THIS IS A THING YOU CARE DEEPLY ABOUT
Okay, so, readers of last week’s X-MEN #20 got a fun surprise:
Apologies in advance to my mother as the below will be of no interest to her (she’s more of a Batman woman), but Wilson Fisk popped up in X-Men!
This is something that’s been in the works for a very, very long time. Back when I was plotting out Devil’s Reign I knew I’d be having Wilson and Mary literally sail off into the sunset. But the big question was: to where?
I texted with X-Men writer Gerry Duggan about the idea that it would be Krakoa, the mutant island paradise. One of the questions I got a lot around that time was about Typhoid Mary and the fact that she’s a mutant but not a part of Krakoa. Well, this is the payoff to that. And holy shit, Gerry has some amazing stories coming up with our happily married duo. I’m incredibly excited (uh, X-cited?) for everyone to see what’s coming up.
One of the things about writing Marvel and DC books is that we tend to go back to the same well for our hero/villain pairings. And it makes sense! They have history! Daredevil and Kingpin! Batman and Joker! Spider-Man and Rent! But it’s really fun to switch things up and get new pairings. One of my favourite “events” when I was a kid was called “Acts of Vengeance,” where the villains realized they should take care of each others’ superhero problems. Which led to one of my all-time favourite comics, where Daredevil beat the shit out of Ultron with a stick:
So, yeah. I love stuff like this. Long-time readers will remember that Kingpin wasn’t even a Daredevil villain back in the day! He was a Spider-Man one, but Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli changed all that with Daredevil: Born Again. So hey, maybe in the future we’ll think of Wilson Fisk as an X-Men bad guy! I love it!
WAIT DAREDEVIL BEAT ULTRON WITH A STICK
Plus an existential robot crisis
