Comics Day on Substack: Chip Does comics Too!!!
It’s COMICS DAY on SUBSTACK! A bunch of amazing creators are debuting their comic substacks today and everyone’s going to forget about me!! And I won’t stand for it!!!!!!
The big one for me, personally, is MSX: MANGASPLAINING EXTRA! As most of you know I’ve been part of a HIT comics podcast for the past year where my manga-loving friends teach me about manga one title at a time, dealing with my inane questions and horrible superhero opinions!
A lot of times in our discussions the manga experts will talk about Japanese comics that haven’t been translated and brought to North American shores yet. So … they’re doing it! This is being led by Christopher Woodrow-Butcher, his husband Andrew Woodrow-Butcher, and Deb Aoki! They’re being helped by translator Aki Yanagi and a growing team of editors, letterers, etc. It’s very exciting!

Besides MSX, my dear friend Joanne Starer and my cherished enemy Khary Randolph (because he draws too good!!!) are launching their Substack, GLASS EYE STUDIOS, with a preview of the incredibly cool looking Sirens of the City, where pregnancy doesn’t just give their main character horrible gas and discomfort and weird cravings, but also SUPERNATURAL POWERS oh no
I’ve known Joanne for—oh jesus, decades—and she’s an incredibly sharp and insightful writer, and I had the pleasure of working with Khary on a Harley Quinn story and he’s an amazing, kinetic artist. This is gonna be VERY good!
And there are a lot of cool things coming out from EXISTING comic substacks as well today! FRIEND OF THE STACK Kelly Thompson is launching BLACK CLOAK, her new creator-owned comic with Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey! The first issue is a beautiful and intriguing entry with a nice bit of character-driven world building! I give it TWO THUMBS UP!

Also, that smug son of a bitch James “Oh I’m a decade younger than you and ten times more talented and successful” Tynion is launching the EXTREMELY good (fuck!!!!) comic THE CLOSET with Gavin Fullerton and Chris O’Halloran. What’ it about, you ask?

ALSO, the wildly talented Rodney Barnes (if you haven’t read KILLADELPHIA you really should) is launching his new book 20º PAST RIGOR today with Maan House and Luis NCT! Zombies emerging from the waters of Flint, Michigan!
It’s VERY creepy! I just read the first issue and it feels like a really fresh take on zombie fiction! Go check out more!
Oh, also, Grant Morrison has a Substack now I guess. Looking forward to reading comics from this up-and-comer!
