LATE-BREAKING NEWS from last week was that Ann Nocenti and I have teamed up for a short story in Daredevil 2 SLASH 650! It’s just a wee four-pager, but it’s SO GOOD! I am pleased.
Funny story, but when I was talking with my editor about what we could do with the space in the issue, I suggested that Ann and I team up for a story. Then I heard nothing back. Fine! I wouldn’t want to work with me either! Weeks later I was chatting with my editor again and I asked him about it and he was like, “yeah, I’m not sure she really gets the idea of co-writing four pages” and I was like, “uh, I meant I would DRAW it.”
It’s a very funny idea to me, bringing in a legendary writer and then saying “you’re co-writing with some super-fan weirdo Canadian.” Anyway! Once THAT was cleared up, she said yes and delivered me one of my favourite scripts ever! I’m in awe of Ann and her use of the medium.
Anyway! She wrote it and I drew/coloured it! Here’s a panel from the story!
COO COO COO COO
When the issue is out I’ll break down the process of making the story!
OH GOD ANOTHER PROCESS POST
Hey! People like those!
EVEN WORSE THIS IS A PRE-PROCESS POST I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE TEASING A PROCESS POST FFS
YOU’RE not my AUDIENCE!!
Anyhoo, speaking of Daredevil, I chatted with Andrew over at FP about our relaunch!
My forest internet was bad, so it may be choppy. And I blurred my background because my wife just kept walking behind me while eating cereal? She doesn’t RESPECT my JOB!
NOR SHOULD SHE
Fair.
Over on the DC side of things, BATMAN: THE KNIGHT #7 is out today!
This issue we look at Bruce’s relationship with his childhood friend Zatanna and his connection to magic. This was a really fun one to write! Tricky too, as I had to really dance around some continuity and make some hard choices about what to follow and what to look away from! But, story aside, the issue is worth it for the Carmine shadow work. That Bruce image below is just (chef’s kiss) perfect! So BROODY
Okay! As promised, I’m gonna start answering your questions! This week’s comes from Aris G.!
Question! I figure with Bat-related stories, there must be a ton of ongoing conversations to keep track of which beautiful bat-child is eating a meal in which comic on a given month. With Daredevil, seeing how the Punisher might be playing a role, what does that coordination look like across titles? Are there other books in play? Also, will we ever see a Daredevil universe similar to what DC has done for Batman? —Aris G.
You’re correct that there are a fair number of continuity conversations with Batman, more than with other characters. He’s a popular guy!
On Batman, Jorge and I are shockingly far ahead. But sometimes that means I’ll be working on a script and then something will have to change because of plans elsewhere that were just hatched. Which is fine! That’s part of working in a shared universe. On the flip side, there are other times we’ll do something in Batman that will change the plans of other creative teams or editorial offices elsewhere because of how far ahead we’ve been working. Such is comic continuity life.
As for Daredevil and Punisher, we had meetings to make sure things lined up and how we could have the two titles work together while being able to be read separately. Once that was worked out, I wrote up a big document of all of my Daredevil issue plot beats and the main ones of Punisher and their release schedules so it (hopefully) makes sense as they come out.
And I love that you think Daredevil will ever be as popular as Batman! I pray that never happens because Daredevil succeeds as a title BECAUSE it’s not as popular as Batman. I did, like, fourteen issues of Daredevil where he wasn’t in costume! Can you imagine me pitching THAT to DC with Batman?!
WAIT YOU DID FOURTEEN ISSUES OF A DAREDEVIL-LESS DAREDEVIL COMIC
Look, I can’t believe it myself.
And that’s it for this week! But before I go, here’s something from the archives. I mentioned before that when I worked at the newspaper I’d shoehorn in comic characters whenever I could. So imagine being the Finance Editor and asking me for an illustration about no-fault car insurance and I give you this:
It’s a miracle I’m not fired from every job tbh
Bye!!!
I've always said, "You know what would make this newsletter even better? More Nocenti." I am SO right.
Also, pretty sure you had Daredevil in costume all that time, just not that Murdoch fella. It was the other, cooler Daredevil.
Any editor worth their salt would have been thrilled with that illustration!
