Writing a lot of Batman this week, and can I just say?…
Batman is SUCH a drama queen!!
In non-BATMAN news, it’s a BIG RELEASE WEEK for the ol’ Chipster (me)!
I’M NOT CALLING YOU THAT
First up for the ol’ Chipster is NEWBURN #7! It’s a big one! Emily and Newburn are going down a wild and dangerous path and Jacob makes it all look so damn good.
And DEVIL’S REIGN finally comes to a close with DEVIL’S REIGN OMEGA! Was there a DEVIL’S REIGN ALPHA? Only in your heart!
There are three awesome stories in the issue that set up the future of New York in the Marvel U (universe, NOT university). Myself, Rafael and Federico used our story to attend a very awkward funeral…
Always pleasure writing Reed Richards. You’re useless, Reed! Useless!
I’m so happy that Rafael is going to be joining us on the main DAREDEVIL title with our relaunch. His work just keeps getting better and better. It’s ILLEGAL for me to show you any of it, but I’m doing it anyway!!! Sue me, Marvel™!!!!!
Now THAT’S some moody Daredevil!
Read this before it becomes a new series on Disney+!!!
TELL ME MORE ABOUT BATMAN! I LOVE BATMAN!!
Jesus! Calm down, man!
Apparently I did an interview for DC about taking over the title. I played real cagey ‘cause I assumed it was a DC job interview and I was about to lose the gig:
I’m really excited today because later on I’m doing a ZOOM (the app, not Professor) with some DC bigwigs to talk 2023 plans! Right now my only idea is “what if Batman is always bleeding” so we’ll see how it goes! Pray for me!
NO
Okay! An atheist! Got it!
A little while back I said I’d answer questions left in the comments, so I figured I’d start! Here’s today’s:
I've always wanted to ask this. Have you ever written anything because you were tired of seeing something being portrayed incorrectly and you thought you should be the one to do it? It is just something of a trend I have been seeing with comics and writing in general lately. —Michael Noble
Nope. Never. The closest I get to that feeling is when I read or re-read several years of a title before I start writing it. There will be moments where I disagree with storytelling decisions (but mostly I’m in awe of the talent involved UGH), but it’s never about a character being portrayed “incorrectly,” because … and this is going to be controversial, I know, but I don’t think a writer CAN portray a character incorrectly. They’re writing the character! Whatever the character says or does is “correct” because that’s what’s happening! I get that readers have their ideas of what these fictional people should be doing or thinking, and you can definitely be mad that what’s happening varies from your thoughts on the matter, but it’s all fiction to me and I just don’t care about these things. If I don’t like something I just stop consuming it. Whether it be a TV show, a comic, or a bad hot dog (that last one is a lie. I WILL finish the hot dog). There’s no company-owned character that I love enough to suffer through a bad story, or, more likely, a story that just isn’t my jam. I know I’m in the minority on this, but life is too short. As everyone knows, I was a huge JLI fan! It’s my favourite DC comics run! Blue & Gold forever! And when—SPOILER—Max Lord shot Blue Beetle in the head I was out. I didn’t think it was bad, it just wasn’t for me. But I would never make it my mission to undo that.
I always think of Dan Slott writing Amazing Spider-Man. The guy was on the title for ten years and there were still people complaining that he wasn’t writing Peter Parker “correctly.” I’m sorry but, after ten years, Dan’s version of Spidey IS the character . There’s so much “Spider-Man wouldn’t do that.” Well, I read that comic, it was published by Marvel and is all official so guess what, Spider-Man DOES do that (go down on Black Cat).
When I write a character it’s because I want to write that character. That goes for almost every comic writer out there. We’re not trying to make them into something consciously “wrong.” We’re trying to enhance the characters and dig into who they are and where they can go.
jesus I shouldn’t have had that espresso shot i’m so sorry
I, uh, hope that answers that?
I … better go
bye
Wait- are you implying Peter ONLY goes down on Black Cat? Like, did he go down on Gwen first? Is there anything he won't do with MJ? Was Black Cat his first kinky gf, and did he and Gwen only do it missionary?
Then there's the whole Peter Parker-Betty Brant angle...
Damn it Chip, I don't want to spend the rest of the day thinking about Spider-Man's sex life. I HAVE WORK TO DO.
I always hear creators talk about comics they loved, but not much about what comics they hated. Are they any comics you really disklike, or hot takes on well received comics?
