So, some more nice things are coming in as the year ends. Multiversity has Public Domain on their Best New Series list and I also got to do shout-outs to books I loved in 2022. SKTCHD gave Public Domain the, uh, “Fate Award”? I accept any award, like I accept my fate, so I’ll take it!
And Comicbook.com gave me the Golden Issue Award for Best Writer!
You know that’s one of the good comic awards because they managed to get “comicbook.com” as their web address! Thanks!
Kieron Gillen, who is actually the best writer in comics, wrote a great thing this week about why he’s stepping back from twitter. It’s both the easiest time to leave the platform and the hardest. Easiest because it’s a hellsite owned and directly operated by a guy who actively spreads misinformation in that glib “I’m just asking questions” style, like some sad sack sitting at the bar every night who is just past the age of the bar’s clientele, wondering why no one is going home with him at 2 a.m. after hours of devil’s advocate debating and negging.
But it’s also the hardest time to leave because the nuclear-level dunking on that guy ON THE WEBSITE HE PAID 44 BILLION FOR is mesmerizing.
Anyway, Kieron is smart, as always. But I’ll probably still use twitter to promote Public Domain Volume One, in stores January 18, 2023. And also post dumb jokes to increase engagement and my dopamine levels.
But, and this is my promise to you, dear newsletter reader: I will also post those dumb jokes here. You’re welcome.
Speaking of PUBLIC DOMAIN VOLUME ONE though! The fine folks at OK Comics just received my signed bookplates, so it’s ALL REALLY HAPPENING!!
Back when I was an illustration student I met Julia Breckenreid. She desperately wanted to be my friend, but I told her that I wouldn’t give her the time of day until she became a widely-celebrated, award-winning illustrator. That was all the encouragement she needed, so she went out and did just that.
Now, one hundred years later, we’re still friends and Julia is imparting her years of knowledge to others who want to be widely-celebrated, award-winning illustrators.
Obviously I’m a fan, but I also think this course is great for comic book cover illustrators. One of the things that feels missing from a lot of comic covers are the IDEAS behind them. Julia is amazing at developing concepts in illustration work and I think if you want to stand out from the other comic cover artists, this course is an excellent start.
So check it out! It’s even ON SALE!!

Happy New Year to the best writer not named Keiron! Best thing I did this year (or was it late last year?) was not tell my wife I was forking over dough to subscribe to this newsletter. (Which is the best newsletter not written by someone named Matthew Rosenberg.) All the best to you!
Happy New Year, Chip!! It’s been a joy to spend time reading your stuff year
