In April of 2019 I emailed comic artist Jacob Phillips, only a toddler at that point, to see if he was interested in working together. He was too young to type properly, but the keyboard-bashed response made it sound like he was indeed interested.
Flash-forward to now, and Jacob is incredibly old and grizzled, forged in a pandemic, and we’ve completed almost six issues of our upcoming Image series, NEWBURN.
News broke this past week about the ongoing series, which starts coming out in November through Image Comics, and we’re both super excited for people to be able to read it! It’s about a specialized private detective named Easton Newburn who’s on retainer to all of the major New York crime families and gangs, there to resolve disputes and solve cases that the police would never be called in for.
Each issue has a done-in-one main story from me and Jacob, and a second crime story by a rotating team of fantastic comic creators. The first backup story, a four-parter called BROOKLYN ZIRCONIA is by the extremely talented Nadia Shammas and Ziyed Yusuf Ayoub and it’s a story about estranged brothers and a crime that brings them together again.
So, yeah! New book! I’ve always loved procedurals AND done-in-one comics, so when I struck upon this idea I got really excited. And then Jacob went and made it ten times better than what was in my head! Comics!
I’ll talk more about the book later (and probably show process stuff for subscribers!), but here’s an exclusssssive sneak peek at the variant I illustrated for our issue one!
The RED one will ONLY be available for order for everyone who subscribes to my Substack on the Annual plan! And the B&W version will be for those subscribed at the Chipnuts level, where they’ll get two copies sent to them!
OH MY GOD YOU’RE SUCH A HUSTLER
I just don’t want people to make the biggest mistake of their lives and NOT subscribe! In a way, I’m a hero!
Speaking of subscribers, I sent out hundreds of personalized video messages to Day One subscribers and they seemed to go well:
More on Wednesday and the new KAPTARA on Friday, along with new images from PUBLIC DOMAIN!
Bye!
-Chip!
I need a little more crime drama in my life, and I love that each issue will be a 1 and done story. I look forward to it, Mr Zdubaker.
Excited for all this Chip Content (tm)
