Newsletter #11: If You Know What I Mean
Superman's greatest strength is his muscles and Batman's greatest strength is also his muscles
OH SO THAT WAS PROJECT INTEREXTING
This week FANTASTIC FOUR + X-MEN was announced, a 4-issue miniseries from THE Marvel Comics that I’m writing, the Dodsons are drawing, and Laura Martin is colouring. It is VERY exciting and I talk about it here like a master promoter who is barely scared shitless of X-Men fans.
A lot of people thought this book was my previously alluded to “Project IntereXting,” but those people are wrong. “Project IntereXting” was an Avengers book that never made it off the ground because I “was not asked to do this.” The FF+X book was code named “Project: Avenging Defenders” and I was asked to do this, but nobody told me to make it good, so we’ll see!
OH OKAY I GET IT NOW
Good. Anyway, this is exciting. I’m hoping now I can greenlight “Project Captain America (Chip Writing The Captain America Series) aka Project Green Gamma Man.” Fingers crossed!
SO WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON THEN
Oh boy, this week is the debut of my new creator-owned series with Jason Loo! It’s a ComiXology digital comic called AFTERLIFT! Paris Alleyne is colouring, Aditya Bidikar is lettering, and Allison O’Toole is editing! Everyone’s giving it their all, even me!
It’s about a young woman named Janice who drives for a ride share company. And one night she picks up a fare with an unusual destination: THE AFTERLIFE. I’m being entirely genuine right now when I tell you that I did not come up with the name of the book first. But I’m very glad the name eventually came to me.
Jason and Paris and Aditya are the BEST.
To find out more, here’s an interview we did with Nerdist!
And wow! The Hollywood Reporter, doing some Hollywood reporting!
Oh man, and also an interview with Word Balloon!
And you can subscribe to the series here!
WOW CHIP YOU’RE LIVING THE LIFE THERE CAN’T BE MORE CAN THERE
Oh, just SEX CRIMINALS COMING BACK!
It’s true! We’re back in January with issue 26! Have I forgotten how to draw since the last arc? Yeah, I did! But man oh man, stick figures boning is still pretty hot I gotta say
It’s our final arc and we’re pulling out all the stops! My drawings may be worse, but my good friend Matt Fraction is still at the top of his game with dialogue!
BOY OH BOY THIS IS A LOT OF YOU WHICH OKAY I DID SIGN UP FOR A “CHIP ZDARSKY” NEWSLETTER BUT STILL
Well, first of all, fuck off. I’m really interesting. Second of all, I wrote a blurb for another ComiXology book coming out this week, TREMOR DOSE! here’s what I said:
“Creepy and gorgeous! A story you’ll keep revisiting as you admire its complexities!”
Now, the jaded reader (Ryan Stegman) would say that I admire the complexities of every story because I am stupid. But I am actually really smart, so, once again, fuck off.
CHIP ANSWERS QUESTIONS
Every week I’ll answer one POLITE and RESPECTFUL question about my life as a podcaster or about my work. The email is zdarskyletters@gmail.com.
Which characters would you most like to write for the Distinguished Competition?
Liam
Thanks for the question Liam, and for cutting to the chase without inserting a “Hello Chip” or a “thanks for all the great comics, Chip.” I really appreciate the brevity.
The character I’d most like to write for DC is Spider-Man. How fucking cool would that be?!
Warm Regards,
Chip
