Warren Ellis has hurt my friends.

https://www.somanyofus.com/

In response, this is an incredible thing they’ve done, along with many other brave people. A document of testimonials and compassion and resources to help those harmed by his actions, those in similar situations, and for him as well. If you live a life you’ll have entanglements, but this is something far different, filled with patterns and procedures. He may not see it, or maybe he does now, but this website and these voices are a gift to him.

Warren has hurt my friends and Warren has been a friend and I hope he can take this gift and learn and grow.

I’m trying as well. On his message boards I laughed along with others at his persona, a feminist empowering twist on a clichéd grumpy old man author, our “Internet Stalin” with his “Filthy Assistants.” I didn’t interrogate it, didn’t go further than jokes and industry talk with him. A kind word from Warren, in public or private, would lift my artistic spirits for days, for weeks. Kelly Sue said this in a great Guardian piece on the subject and it sums up how I feel as well: “I did nothing but benefit from my friendship with Warren Ellis for years. I paid no price. And that incurs a debt. I don’t know if we can make sure this never happens again, but I can think we make it not as easy.”

WOW HEAVY START FOR THE NEWSLETTER

Yeah, I haven’t been very … online in the last month and a half. I wanted to use my twitter to amplify voices while taking everything in, and I feel like I’m losing my mind watching people go back to “normal,” or at least the “new normal,” when the world doesn’t actually seem any better.

WOW HEAVY POST-START FOR THE NEWSLETTER

Well, hey, maybe next time I’ll post about X-Men punching Fantastic Fours.

I’ll have a lot to talk about later, but for now I just want to leave you with the small thing from the past couple of months that made me genuinely happy. The amazing people at Save Daredevil arranged to have me interview one of my heroes: Ann Nocenti.

Her run on Daredevil changed the way I view comics. Getting to chat with her without fucking it up too badly was a dream come true. She’s the best.

All right. This was a short one, dipping my toes back in. I’ll try to get back to this every week again since you’re all paying ten bucks a month for it.

WAIT WHAT

Take care of each other, listen to each other, and I’ll see you next week.

Love,
Chip
