Newsletter #50: Quad Day

It's all a bit much I'm sorry

Look, sometimes there are weeks where no new Chip Zdarsky comics are on the stands. I know, I know, it breaks my heart too. We call these weeks “The Dark Times,” but, like they say, it’s always darkest before the dawn. Unless there’s no Chip Zdarsky comics out the week after. If that ever happens you can just quit collecting comics tbh.

But then there are the weeks where TWO Chip Zdarsky comics are out. Blessed weeks that fans, prompted by myself, call “Chip Double Dip” weeks. It’s like a warm blanket of overpriced paper products for you and your loved ones (me).

Rarer still are the “Triple Chipple” weeks where three Chip Zdarsky comics out. These are, and I don’t think I’m overselling it at all, much like cumming. Glorious shivers running through your body, extreme sweating, and maybe a small amount of shame. Triple Chipples are wondrous events.

Well, dear reader, hand over your wallet and nobody gets hurt because I have four comics out this week. It’s new territory I’m calling “The Quadarsky.”

FIRST:

DAREDEVIL 29!

This issue? It’s badass! That’s all there is to it! Marco and Marcio are going to pummel your eyes! And you’ll thank the for it!

SECOND:

BLACK HAMMER VISIONS #3!

I got to write an Abraham Slam story! And work with the unbelievably talented Johnnie Christmas! And actual for-real Dave Stewart colours! And I got to give Jeff Lemire some new IP! Because I LOVE HIM!

THIRD:

BATMAN: URBAN LEGENDS #2!

Eddy and Marcus are superstars and give us some “real feels” as the kids (aged 28-40) say these days! I got to write Batman being Batman and that’s a fun time!

FOURTH:

SPIDER’S SHADOW #1!

What can I say? This is me, Pasqual and Matt re-imagining both a classic WHAT IF story and the WHAT IF brand as a whole! It’s a couple of years in the making and I’m super proud of our first issue and having the chance to explore longer stories in these alternate timelines. This is a Spidey horror comic! Remember when I used to write light, fun stories? What’s wrong with me?!

Anwyay, this issue’s cover is also the first appearance of the new WHAT IF logo I designed!

We’re treating it as kind of an imprint, so if you see this logo in the corner of your comic, that means QUALITY and also ANOTHER UNIVERSE!

Anyway, I’m excited to launch this and I have the inside scoop on other WHAT IF tales coming and everyone’s in for a treat. A treat I say!

And here’s the real wild news this week: technically I won a GLAAD AWARD!

I say “technically” because while I’m credited as a co-writer, really it was Anthony Oliveira’s story. I just gave advice along the way and stood back in awe at how great he is at writing comics. So really, I didn’t win the GLAAD award. But will I add it to my Wikipedia page? Fucking right I will!

Oh, hey, I forgot to mention this in the last newsletter but they just announced a small follow-up to SPIDER-MAN: LIFE STORY! A one-shot Annual where Mark and I get to tell the story of comics’ favourite cantankerous newspaperman, J. JONAH JAMESON! I made the cover too!
