Newsletter #51: A League of Chip's Own
it's fucking madness casey affleck wasn't cast as zack snyder's robin
Well, last week we sent the final Sex Criminals hardcover off to the press. Looking though my previous bio pages for it just reminded me how special that book really was:
A TEAR JUST CAME TO MY EYE
Only one eye? You should get that checked out. Unless … was that some sort of sexual thing? Is “tear” something else? And is “eye”—
NO
Gotcha.
It’s a big week of new comic releases! First up is issue one of my new Justice League book, JUSTICE LEAGUE: LAST RIDE!
You may recall this was going to be a “digital first” book, but it turns it’s a “digital same time” book so you can buy a copy today in your comic shoppe or on your comic tablette!
Miguel Mendonça is the artist and he’s a total dream to work with, drawing possibly the best Superman in the Superman business. And our old friend Enrica Eren Angiolini is beautifully colouring the book! You may remember her from our “Sexual Gary” special! From Sexual Gary to Batman!
THE WAY IT SHOULD BE
The way it SHOULD be!
Also, BATMAN: URBAN LEGENDS issue 3 is out! It has my favourite Batman panel to date. If you’ve read it, you’ll know it right away.
Eddy Barrows is drawing the hell out of the story, but I’d really like to highlight fellow Torontonian Marcus To for his perfect young Robin in the flashbacks. He’s THE BEST:
And last, but not least, SPIDER’S SHADOW issue 2 is out tomorrow! Pasqual and Matt delivered panels that genuinely surprised me. And I wrote it!
No spoilers, but I just want to show everyone their Wilson Fisk. SO BEAUTIFUL.
YES WE GET IT EVERYONE YOU WORK WITH IS GREAT
Sorry for telling the TRUTH!!
Comics are incredibly hard work. Not for the writers, obviously. They just have to write some words and make sure every issue ends with “THE END … OR IS IT?” But the artists are the hardest working creative folk in any field. Where else do you find people who need to understand storytelling, architecture, anatomy, fashion, fucking CARS and also produce a full publishable page every day or two? It’s honestly shocking comics even come out.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS THE KEYNOTE FOR THE EISNERS
I’m serious! I won’t even highlight my OWN books here! Look at this page below from CARNAGE: BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD #3 from Chris Mooneyham and Mattia Iacono! Gorgeous! Labour-intensive! Meanwhile, fuckin’ Karla Pacheco sat around chortling while writing a Carnage sea shanty! The nerve!
Ugh the sea shanty is so good I’m so mad. You should probably go get this.
HA HA KARLA IS THE BEST
Take it down a notch, pal.
Another great book that I read lately is the upcoming Black Label series THE NICE HOUSE ON THE LAKE by James Tynion IV, Álvaro Martínez Bueno and Jordie Bellaire.
Look, saying nice things about this book is like saying, “you know who’s handsome? That Chris Evans guy.” Everyone who’s read this book thinks it’s great and I’m no exception. It’s James’ best work to date and Alvaro and Jordie are a revelation. And of course it’s edited by Chris Conroy, who somehow manages to be one of the best editors in the business while also yelling at the world on twitter 22 hours of the day.
You need to read this issue one. It’s fantastic comics, full-stop. I haven’t read issue two, so maybe that one is fuckin’ shitty. I just don’t know.
SO MAGNANIMOUS
Look, I just don’t know!!
I’ve been reading a lot of fun comics lately. And you should read them too!!!!
First, obviously, is SILVER COIN #2. I know what you’re thinking: “But Chip! Isn’t this YOUR new hit Image series?” Yes, it is. Or, rather, it was. But I was fired after issue one because I am “difficult to work with” and “was only supposed to write issue one,” so Kelly Thompson decided to swoop in like the vulture she is and also write a better issue than mine. Which is, frankly, rude!! Michael Walsh chose to stay on the series and delivers his standard amazing work. Yawn!
Also out this week is the new Image series TIME BEFORE TIME! I really enjoyed this one. It’s a fresh, interesting take on time travel that looks gorgeous and makes you want more. Famed artist Declan Shalvey wrote it with Rory McConville because everyone knows artists can’t write. Joe Palmer and Chris O'Halloran illustrate it beautifully. Go get it!!
And that’s it this week! If you want to hear my shitty voice or see my rapidly deteriorating face, here are some interviews I’ve done recently!
First, always a nice time talking with Sal:
Next! I flew to Italy for a second to give this interview:
I then talked hot dogs and Scott Speedman on War Rocket Ajax:
And, as always, our weekly MANGASPLAINING podcast is out today! This week we talked about BEASTARS! It’s my first high school furry book! Listen to see if I’m a furry now!
And that’s it!!!
Thanks for reading. I’d like to leave you with a bit of good news in this horrible world of bad news. It turns out…..
…comic signings are back, baby!!!!
Take care,
Chip!!!!!!
I was just looking at my Sex Criminals TPB collection the other day (clearly one of the highest points of my decadent life) and considering whether to upgrade to the Deluxxxe version, and was trying to find information about all the sexxxy exxxtras in it.
One question I haven't been able to find anywhere so far: Are the NSFW variant covers included in the hardcovers? I can't even find pictures of most of them!! Are they available anywhere at all or are they forever lost, like drops of bodily fluid in the rain?
Please help this buy-curious fan.
