Newsletter #53: RIP Robin
He was a good kid. Probably shouldn't have gone out at night to beat up criminals I guess.
Look, last week was all fun and games, but this week I have three books out, aka “The Triple Chip Dip” (#triplechipdip) so I’ve got to sell you these books. I don’t want to! I really don’t! I just want to curl up with you on the couch and playfully tease upcoming projects in your ear with my trademark “throaty moan-whisper,” but the power-that-be need copies of my comics to fly off shelves in order to keep the lights on at Disney and … I want to say Warner Brothers (AT&T? I don’t know)?
It’s a huge responsibility and one I absolutely take lightly.
GOD BLESS YOU CHIP ZDARSKY
Thank you.
First up is BATMAN: URBAN LEGENDS #4!
In this Very Special Issue I got to revisit one of my favourite scenes in all of comics: the murder of Robin. It’s wild that I got to do that since I’m also responsible for his demise, having voted over 3,000 times back in 1988:
Life is strange.
Anyway, once again, you have to see Eddy Barrows’ pencils. This is a newsletter EXCLUSIVE, so finally you have your justification for signing up! Every page he sends in is a marvel and my hand hurts just from looking at them:
Just gorgeous. AND safety conscious! You should sign up to Eddy’s instagram for more!
Next up is JUSTICE LEAGUE: LAST RIDE #2!
Any excuse to have Wonder Woman cutting through an army of Apokolipsian fools, I tell ya. And look at this simple and beautiful sequence!
That J’onn is perfect. I love him. I hope nothing bad happens to him.
This has been an incredibly fun series to write, especially getting to see Miguel and Enrica level up page after page with beautiful renderings of the world’s greatest superheroes. Don’t believe me? Go check out their instagrams! What? Where are their instagrams, you ask?
YOU FUCKIN’ WISH YOU COULD PULL OFF THAT OUTFIT, OZYBLAND IAS
Shut up!!!!
Anyway, last but not least this week is SPIDER’S SHADOW #3!
Just lookit that Phil Noto cover. He’s amazing. Also, inside? Pasqual and Matt go full Ditko, which is a JOY:
THERE’S SOMETHING REALLY INTERESTING HAPPENING HERE WITH DITKO-CREATED SPIDEY VILLAINS INTERACTING WITH A DITKO-INSPIRED ENVIRONMENT MORE CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH HIS CLASSIC DR. STRANGE RUN
I guess so. Never really thought about it.
Anyway, that’s it for comics this week!
On Mangasplaining we talk about Even Though We’re Adults, which is a really thoughtful and mature story about love and relationships. SPOILER: I highly recommend the book! It was a fun conversation too, so go check it out!
Also, here’s something stupid that I made a million years ago.
Bye
One of the best goddamn newsletters out there.
HAHA. God damn.
