Good times, still not sick
So that was a New York Comicon
It was an absolutely wild time. Tabling next to Jorge was like tabling next to the sun, where I just got to bask in his radiance the whole time. The lines were long, the readers were wonderful, and I had a genuinely nice time.
Earlier in the week I attended a private CGC signing, doling out signatures and doodles on all sorts of books. One of the helpers asked if I’d do a drawing of Jorge, which was quite challenging. It’s hard to capture such beauty! I think I did okay though.
Also, before the show got underway, I was able to infiltrate some high-level Marvel meetings as a DC spy. I just kept telling everyone I was “Jed MacKay” and they seemed to buy it.
Here’s a nice photo that Gerry took of me explaining to Hickman how to write “Spider-Man.”
And the follow-up shot where Hickman responds to my telling him how to write:
Good times. You can also see ACTUAL Spider-Man writer Zeb Wells asking someone to take his arm in order to escort him home (he’s scared of everything).
It was nice to see so many friends and colleagues after years of being trapped in Canada. I even got to meet the forever aggravating Supple Boiz, who gifted me their debut Image issue. Thanks, guys!
As the show got underway, Jorge told me that he was tasked with drawing ME for the guy who made me draw Jorge. Makes sense! Then Jorge pulled out his phone and showed me what he’d done:
LOOKS PRETTY ACCURATE TO ME
Needless to say, the rest of the weekend I refused to speak to Jorge.
Okay! There were also some ANNOUNCEMENTS at NYCC!
First up, THE ALLNIGHTER is back! Our third and final volume is coming out monthly starting on October 31! Jason and I are super excited to wrap up our vampire superhero story about found family!
And then, Marvel made it official: I’m writing an Avengers mini called AVENGERS: TWILIGHT, with astounding art by Daniel Acuña!
Here’s the promo image we made for it. Daniel is so damned good, I can’t wait for everyone to see what he’s been cooking for so long.
There’s also a promo video that Marvel made for the series, but be warned: it’s a little spoiler-y and I hate spoilers!!!
AVENGERS: TWILIGHT is a story about Steve Rogers, adrift in a world where the old heroes are gone and the new Avengers continue to save the day. But things aren’t as they seem…
DUN DUN DUNNNN
I know, right?!
It’s big and fun and beautiful. I hope everyone digs it when it starts dropping in January.
On the DC side, I did a Batman panel where I talked a little bit about the upcoming arc, BATMAN: MINDBOMB!
It’s a wild story where we really dig into Zur and his horrific effect on Bruce. And to make things more challenging, we have The Joker pulling strings.
It’s my favourite work of Jorge’s—
BESIDES THAT PORTRAIT OF YOU?
…Yes. Besides that portrait of me. His art on MINDBOMB is next level, and so is Tomeu’s! They have a perfect updated look for Joker that I kind of want to cosplay??
Beyond NYCC, there was some fun news this week about PUBLIC DOMAIN! It made the New York Public Library’s list of BEST NEW COMICS FOR ADULTS! So go and check it out (of the library) and enjoy!
Speaking of BEST COMICS, a new issue of Brubaker and Martin’s FRIDAY is out! A beautiful, creepy story about an all-grown-up child detective coming home for the Christmas holiday from hell! It’s excellent and also it’s … pay what you can?! An amazing deal unless you’re rich like me, who can pay a LOT for a new Brubaker/Martin book!
I think that’s it?! After a week away I’m back to the ol’ grindstone getting comics made. Oh! This week, CATWOMAN #58 is out, continuing the GOTHAM WAR with some sweet Jason Todd action, and NEWBURN #12 where Emily goes off on a solo adventure with someone from her past!
