October 30, 2020 is the date I sent my first outline in for THE FEAR KING, the culmination of mine and Marco’s Wilson Fisk storyline. It was a smaller thing at the time, what people would call a “mini event,” but it grew and grew and turned into something much bigger, retitled DEVIL’S REIGN, a story that changes the status quo for Marvel’s NYC.
This was hard. A lot of writing, a lot of revisions. Planning an event is no small feat and our editors Devin Lewis, Danny Khazem and Thomas Groneman were instrumental in making sure all the pieces fit and came out on time. Marco insisted on doing all the art in the book and I’m so glad he did. Every page from him and Marcio is gorgeous and this book would be nothing without them. I don’t think people understand how much work goes into drawing a Marvel book, let alone an event. With an event every second page is larger than life with too many characters that you’ve never drawn before, and behind it all is a writer who feels immense guilt when he types “and then every person in Manhattan starts to attack”.
I hope people enjoyed the story and feel the love we have for these characters (even when we hurt them so much!). As wild as it sounds, there’s still more to come. DEVIL’S REIGN OMEGA sets up the new status quo and then in July DAREDEVIL #1 blows it all apart. Marco and I are in the home stretch and are joined by the amazing WOMAN WITHOUT FEAR artist Rafael de Latorre to give, what I hope, is the biggest and wildest Daredevil story of all time.
CONGRATS CHIP
I … wow, thank you. You never say nince things to—
CONGRATS ON GETTING THROUGH SEVERAL PARAGRAPHS WITHOUT TELLING ANY OF YOUR “JOKES”
ugh I hate you so much
So, yeah! Devil’s Reign is over! Long live the devil!
In other news the Justice League: Last Ride trade paperback is coming out in June, so I chatted with Forbidden Planet about it!
Tell your comic shop to order it! Find out a month before BATMAN debuts how I write Batman (he’s dark! Oooo!)
In other news, I’m a Very Special Person in the comics industry so I got to read an advance copy of the amazing new Walking Dead book CLEMENTINE by Tillie Walden! It’s firmly set in that universe, but with a really strong YA sensibility. I highly recommend it!
And that’s it this week! To celebrate Devil’s Reign ending and Luke Cage having run for mayor, here’s one of my stupid photoshop jokes from the files (my files are stupid).
Bye!
Chip’s Funtime Substack couldn’t exist without you! Looking at the Kid and Play joke though, maybe that would be for the best? Anyway, your subscription enables me to make fun stuff, hire fun creators, and give you comics with the Zdarsky Touch™. So, thanks!
Loved the ending to Devils Reign! Set up an interesting status quo for NYC coming that in very much looking forward to!
I loved Devil's Reign, one of my favorite events in a long time. cant wait to see what else you have in store for Daredevil (and also whats coming for Batman of course)
