One of the worst parts about being an “author” is having to provide author photos. During my days working for a newspaper I had to have head shots taken, and in the majority of them I look like an extra from a comedy about British politicians in the early 2000s.
Thankfully, by the end of my time at the paper I had grown into the cool bad boy that you know today:
Once I was driven from newspapers I needed new photos. These have been my go-to shots for the last ten years. You can see the light draining from my eyes and the colour draining from my hair, so they felt pretty accurate.
But lately they don’t feel like the represent me and how extremely tired and haggard I’ve become. So, the other night, as usual, my wife was taking photos of me like a creep. And when I saw them I said, “That’s me.” She said, “Of course that’s you. What the fuck are you on about?” Well, what I was the fuck on about was that she truly captured who I am now as a writer and artist. As an elder statesman in an abhorrent industry of broken dreams. So now I have a new author photo:
This is what life does to you and the people need to know. I immediately fired my stylist, my makeup specialist and my hair curator in the quest to present as my authentic self, i.e., broken. This is my formal request for all the comic book news sites to start using this photo when I’ve done bad things OR good things.
YOU, UH, YOU SURE?
That’s a man who just wrote four years of Daredevil, not some rosy cheeked naïf who wrote Howard The Duck. It’s time for the world to know.
In non-pictoral Chip news, the second part of my interview with Matt(hew) Rosenberg is up!
Also, in sadder news, Matt’s co-creator Tyler Boss just had his car stolen. It was recovered, but it was trashed and his original artwork was … doused in gasoline? Not fun. Check out Matt’s twitter for more and, if you want to help, there are links in the thread to purchase non-gasoline-soaked original art from Tyler and prints from his wife Courtney.
And finally! For my paid subscribers, a Very Important Scene from the latest issue of KAPTARA! Enjoy!
