Comic book readers sometimes dream about comic creator friendships, and I have to admit it’s pretty cool that I can text Mark Waid at four in the morning with “u up? need 2 talk about legion of superheroes baby”. But it’s not all comics chat and cool ideas, sometimes you get texts from Ryan Stegman as well:
Guy can’t take a fuckin’ hint!!!
This week it’s Superman’s birthday, which is February 29, Leap Day, which is why he looks so young. How do I know his birthday? ‘Cause it’s in this old DC calendar so kids could … know … when Hawkman & Hawkwoman’s wedding anniversary was?
Um, we fuckin’ get it, Captain Marvel, you want to BE Superman! What a loser:
Anyway, this is all so I can repost this Superman birthday gag. Enjoy:
JESUS CHRIST WHY
Look, you try filling one of these every week!!!
On Wednesday AVENGERS: TWILIGHT #3 is out, along with a reprint of issue one!
Issue three is pretty cool, IMO. Lots of fun, big moments. And also, Cap being a badass! Or at least pretending to be:
As always, I don’t scour the internet looking for reaction, but I’ve been told by people in POSITIONS OF POWER that readers are flocking to the book! Flocking! And while I do my best to write these stories for myself and my collaborators, it’s nice knowing that people are digging it. Daniel’s art alone is worth the price of admission!
Also, editor Tom Brevoort won’t shut up about it!!!
Chip Zdarsky has gone on record correctly saying that getting a compliment from me is like seeing a unicorn. They’re rare enough that he and Gerry Duggan coined the term “A Tompliment” to describe the rare instance when I say something positive such as “it was all right.” But let me tell you—and I really don’t like to say such things about a book I worked on—AVENGERS TWILIGHT #3 is a really good issue! The preliminaries and the set-up are over and so now Chip and collaborator Daniel Acuna can get to the heart of the matter. This issue has at least three legitimate stand-up-and-cheer moments in it, one of which was a part of my initial story notes many years ago. I’m sure that you’ll all tell me that I’m wrong, but I think this one really gets wood on the ball. My highest personal recommendation.
And this week is the SERIES FINALE of The Allnighter! I’m incredibly proud of this weird book and the big places Jason and I got to take it. In a lot of ways this was our pandemic project, and it kept us sane-ish and busy during some really rough months. I fell in love with these characters and I hope people get a chance to read it all, either digitally or in print.
There’s a SNEAK PEEK of issue 15 up at Monkeys Fighting Robots! Check it ouuuuut
Oh man, it’s a TRIPLE CHIPPLE this week with the penultimate issue of NEWBURN! People die! Things explode! Jacob makes it beautiful! It’s our almost-last hurrah as Newburn is finally cornered! It’s a good one!
This week I’m going to be in Seattle for EMERALD CITY COMIC CON! I’ll be with the fine folks of Comic Sketch Art signing books and doing my classic ink wash doodles! As a reminder, all personalized signatures are FREE!
I have two panels over the course of the weekend. The first one is called THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON COMICS WITH CHIP ZDARSKY and I did not come up with that title. It’s my “spotlight panel” and it’s going to be hosted by THE Kieron Gillen all the way from jolly ol’ England, oy! It should be a right corker, innit!
The other panel is BREAKING [INTO] THE SOURCE WALL: HOW TO WORK FOR DC COMICS, featuring a bunch of DC creators swinging knives at the audience telling the to back the fuck away from our jobs!!
So, yeah! If you’re in Seattle, come see meeeeeee
Bye!

dear chip,
is superman's birthday LEAP day because he can LEAP tall buildings in a single bound?
and if so, shouldn't his birthday now be FLY day?
TGI FLY-day!
love

Happy birthday Superman! Kinda cool that Legacy is ramping up for production as the guy gets another year older.
Hopefully Chris Superman, the definitely-not-made-up real life inspiration for Superman, is able to claw his way out of the grave to make it to another premiere.
And GOD Avengers Twilight is so cool man, thank you for writing this.
And, if you ever get texts from Hickman, tell him he's KILLING it on Ultimate Spider-Man. I read somewhere that you were offered this book but tbh- I can't imagine anyone other than Hickman doing this story
