Treasures in ye olde comps pile. PLUS! New ZCN!
So, I’ve started the process of getting ready for COMICCOMPSCON24 and boy oh boy am I in trouble. Nine short boxes full plus a stack of trades and hardcovers as high as Chip Jr. (11). I mean, the BATMAN books alone…
Digging through all these comps has actually been quite lovely, like a trip down memory lane. When I come across an old HOWARD THE DUCK I remember my editor yelling at me for being late. When I find an old STAR LORD I remember my editor yelling at me for writing a bad script. Cherished memories.
One of these memories was of the STAR WARS cover I illustrated featuring the, uh, beloved character Jaxxon. It was a fun gig. I made the stairs carrots, making full use of my “Interpretive Illustration” degree.
During this period, DC put out a book with a 1:5000 limited variant cover by Jim Lee. Which means retailers had to order 5000 copies of a book to get ONE of these Very Special Covers. As a goof, Marvel decided to put out a 1:4999 black & white variant of my STAR WARS cover.
Well, it turns out I still have one:
Back when this came out it was worth a ludicrous amount of money. But, as you all know, I hate money, so I completely forgot about it in my closet. Apparently it’s still worth some money though?
Weird, man.
Anyway, for COMICCOMPSCON24, I’m going to raffle this bad boy off and donate the proceeds to Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières. So, another reason to come out on DECEMBER 14! You could get a weird comic AND support people doing good work!
Sadly, the coward Jeff Lemire has had to cancel, BUT! Vita Ayala has taken his place! So fuck you, Jeff!!

Aw, I actually feel bad saying that. Jeff’s a great guy, he just can’t stand being in a room with me.

Seven issues! I can’t believe this dumb thing is still going. If you want it to KEEP it going, pester your retailers to order them! If they’re, liken “I don’t want to pay pennies for a free giveaway that promotes books that people will then buy from me” then tell them they can charge a buck for one! I don’t care!!!
