It's still so weird to see Joker just being all "hey, Bruce Wayne! my enemy." Can't recall when that started. Snyder run? Man, Failsafe/Zur is insane! Gonna be an all-timer "villain."
Chip, for the love of god and the personal safety of everyone around you, do not let go of shame. Instead try to resolve to be better at it and we'll all have a better 2024.
I miss Marco too. But hey, least he’s getting to work on something as epic as Ultimate Spider-Man with John Hickman, so there’s that. Though I confess there are some days I wish he was working on Batman with you, but then I remember Jorge and know I’d just miss him all too terribly.
Just curious, and I know this is probably an unlikely thing, but by any chance do you know if the DR omni will have the issues in chronological order? And not just the main ones, but the whole event, if that’s possible?
Also kudos to another exciting installment of Batman this week. And boy what an issue it was. Seems like both bats and jokes have been put through the wringer by Brucie’s artificial split personality...that Bruce even made himself a split personality I think says a lot about his mental state and that he seriously needs to seek some professional help when this is done. But I am definitely looking forward to seeing how Joker Year One ties into the Zur story, and then to see how our, I’m guessing, new dynamic duo are going to escape Zur’s prison together?
Speaking of year one, I was curious about how the split timelines between joker’s early times, and the timeframe set in the future is supposed to work exactly? Is it supposed to jump back and forth randomly and stuff, or is the early year one stuff going to be the main story, while the stuff in the future is going to be the back up in the issue?
Anyways, happy new year, hope it’s a great one for you.
Ah, I see. I wasn’t sure if, like the other major arcs that had back ups that tied into the overarching story, the future bits were going to be that way also. But I think I see what you are getting at. And I am very interested in seeing how this will be handled.
Just curious, was it or is it a daunting process to go to the beginning of a character with such a long history, and carve out a new chapter set in such an early time frame, while having to fold it into what is currently canon and make it all work? From a writer’s standpoint.
I wouldn't say "daunting," but it definitely required revisiting other Joker stories. I mostly tried to make it work with ZERO YEAR and Tom & Mitch's recent Joker story since those are the most recent upgrades to the continuity.
Perhaps you are right and daunting isn’t the right word. Complex might be better. I just imagine it takes a bit of jump roping and hoop jumping to weave something new that ties into all this and make it sing, so to speak. So in that I thought it might prove a challenge. Then again, you have managed to handle a run that is one overarching story with many different arcs that is all coming together nicely, so I suppose it shouldn’t be something you will need to worry about.
Now all we are needing to go over still is the other two jokers, and what they have been up to.
So if Batman is really like you, what color PJs do the voices in YOUR head wear?
Echoing the earlier comment, I was curious where/how you were sliding Joker’s Year One. That story by Tom & Mitch was maybe the creepiest “superhero” story I’ve read since, well, their creepy scary Riddler story. (Those guys give me nightmares!) Anyway, not to gush over how awesome Tom King is, I really love this Batman run. I’ve said this earlier but tearing apart his meticulous planning and having it literally be his downfall (and not the Justice League’s) is a brilliant hook. Now don’t screw it up.
Ha! Yeah, I love Tom & Mitch's story. Incredibly creepy. This definitely slides in just before that, and while MY Joker isn't as creepy, it'll all make total sense I swear!!!!

Last Newburn was nuts! Love it!
Yeah, I believe Scott started it! And thanks! Newburn is cooooookin

I DON'T NEED TO EXPLAIN MYSELF TO YOU
Doctor, I think we might need the rubber mouth guard again this afternoon.

The YEAR ONE bits will be the bulk of the story, with the FUTURE parts strewn throughout. It all works together!

Plenty of books to look forward to! My next purchase is your Spidey Omni! Any plans for signings this year?
I've got five U.S. signings planned for 2024! Need to wait for the shows to announce before I can say anything though!
Awesome! Thanks for the response! I look forward to more info! I just got your Batman Vol. 2. Great stuff! keep ‘er going bud!

Hahahahaha It’s the Joker, it doesn’t have to make sense. Scott Snyder proved that easily enough! (I mean that nicely Scott!) Is Jorge doing JYO?
It's Giuseppe Camuncoli and Andrea Sorrentino on JYO! Jorge picks it up again right after those three issues in present day with 145.
Oh happy happy days! I love the shit out of Andrea. And Giuseppe is so gifted. Look at you working either all the superstars!
Yay on the Devil's Reign Omnibus. It'll go great next to the Spider-Man by Chip Zdarsky Omnibus that was finally delivered yesterday. 😎
Ha! That's TOO MUCH CHIP
There's no such thing as too much Chip!
dear chip,
thanks for sharing all this as always!
i know that you usually try to avoid spoilers in the batman art you share, but now we know that batman is batman.
ooh, unless it's a misdirection. are you trying to get us to THINK that batman is batman, so later it's a fun surprise that batman ISN'T batman?
i know you probably can't answer but i get it. batman is or isn't batman.
love,
batman
"God, it’s fun writing Batman. We’re really alike so it’s incredibly easy."
Chip really said "he's literally me"
Here’s to many great 2024 vibrators…Chip. Vibrators, vibrations all wonderful.
When you mentioned the Hitachi Magic Wand, I thought of the Beach Boys’ Good Vibrations.
Bats got bats in his belfry and then some. Please do not be furious if you did not think of this until now, Chip.
Congratulations on another Omni (DR!)
And your shame is okay, Chip.
Sending you great vibes for this 2024 weekend.
