ART & DOOM
also ryan stegman i guess
I’ve received a lot of lovely messages about the wrecking ball that was Miguel. I see you. I hear you. I’m not ready to love again. Thank you.
One thing I failed to mention in the last newsletter was something I did for Comic Frontier. They wanted me to talk about a piece of original art that I owned, but instead I talked about every piece of art on my studio walls.
It was a really fun piece to do, mostly ‘cause it reminded me of all the talented friends I have. Go check it out! Trust me!
Speaking of art, twenty years ago my friend Sarah Lazarovic protested the fact that Canada did not have a National Portrait Gallery by starting one in her garage. Now, twenty years later, Canada still doesn’t have a National Portrait Gallery, so Sarah’s upped her game and is having a show in an actual gallery. It’s called “The National Portrait Gallery of Canada of Bloorcourt” and its opening is tonight in Toronto, with a ton of beautiful pieces!
Myself, I contributed an oil painting I did over the holidays of my hero: Nathan Fielder, comedian and pilot of the famed “Miracle Over The Mojave” flight.
I told the gallery the price is “$1,000,000 o.b.o” if anyone’s interested.
In COMIC BOOK NEWS, over the holidays the special one-shot THE WILL OF DOOM came out! It was a fun one to write, serving as an epilogue to ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM and as a bit of a tee-up for some CAPTAIN AMERICA / ARMAGEDDON goodness. CAFU killed it on art, but I think my favourite part of the issue is the fact that I gave him this reference for one of Doom’s looks:
Which is, of course, from Mattel’s Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars toy line that I played with as a kid. So, yeah, some dreams do come true, Miguel.
In “I’m sorry” news, it appears that Ryan Stegman saw the success of my newsletter and decided to make his own. To free up time for it he actually quit drawing X-Men, which is funny as I didn’t even know he was drawing it? I guess I’ll know everything he does now as he signed me up for this goddamn thing without my permission.
Head on over and subscribe. At the very least it’s good for keeping tabs on Ryan, in case he ends up in your neighborhood and you finally need to buy a security camera.

I caught up on Captain America over the holiday and I think it’s the best book coming out at Marvel! It feels like I’m on the ground floor of a run as great as your daredevil run.
I’m really surprised by how much I am enjoying the story of David, he’s a really tragic character. I also think your voice for cap is really incredible. “Doom was right, I have to be light” and then the reveal of the captain america costume was a really great moment.
Anyway just wanted to check in Chip and know that I’m really loving your stuff!
Also today is my birthday and Miguel is coming over for a nice sushi dinner. Just figured you should know.
Hi Chip,
Oh I loved seeing some of your original art in that Comic Frontier article.
Such a nice variety, and the personal pieces were especially beautiful. Your oil painting was cool too.
I remember seeing that Jim Chueng Reed Richards! But did I read it? 🫣
Being that you’re writing Wolverine and Weapon X, will Maverick be involved? I know you can’t answer about David Colton, so I figured I ask about Maverick instead.
I finally read the Carnage story you and Marco did. It is so fantastic. Can’t wait until you work together again.
I really enjoy what you’re doing with Doom and Cap.
Oh, after almost two years I finally! started my comics conversations project (Inkterviews) that will most definitely veer into Daredevil & King Daredevil waters. Focusing on art and story process and things (Not just how much I love the characters.)
I know you’ve kindly agreed to talk to me twice now Chip (Thank you 🙏😈). I’m so lo-fi, would you be okay with doing a written interview? No rush, whenever your schedule permits.
If you’re interested, the first inkterview is with Mahmud Asrar (and -oh no- it’s about a page from Amazing X-Men 2 and beardo Cyclops)

Thank you again for always creating great stories, art, characters, and newsletters Chip.
It’s always a treat to read your thoughts. Now, Ryan Stegman? I don’t know.
Have a great week, Chip.
