Aww chip, don’t feel bad at all. Anyone who was complaining that your run on DD was bad clearly is lacking in refined taste. Were some of the initial arcs slower for some people’s tastes? Maybe, but that’s subjective. Overall it’s one of the most enjoyable runs on the character, especially for me, since the days Ed Brubaker was writing for him. And the place you left him off at, I’m surprised no one ever thought to do that before. So kudos for an incredible tenure on the Man Without Fear.

Also with the success that Batman has been, I’d imagine it’s MARVEL who’s gonna come running to lock you in exclusively before DC does. Seriously, Failsafe through Mindbomb has been amazing, and I can’t wait to see what Joker Year One has to offer.

Also, dude, if I wasn’t bummed about you having to pull out of MegaCon already, then the thought I can’t shake your hand for such a great first issue with Avengers Twilight definitely did it. I mean, wow! What a start! And the art is definitely appropriate for the future setup this series takes place in. I am very eager to see how the rest of this is going to turn out.

Also if this is anything to go by, and DC doesn’t lock you down for an exclusive, I definitely want to see you tackle an ongoing main avengers series.

Side note: while back you offered some advice about how to write dialogue boxes and how to separate them. Can I ask, how do you script out internal monologue boxes in your scripts? Do you have a separate way of denoting them from regular dialogue bubbles? Cause I’m trying to figure something easier for myself than what I am currently doing.

Ex. Character A (VO): blah blah blah

The VO stands for Voice over for me.

Anywho, looking forward to all the upcoming releases Chip!

There's no set way for scripting, so I tend to do it like this:

BATMAN CAP: The darkness envelops me like a cold lover who doesn't care that I just warmed up.

For dialogue coming from off-panel, I use "BATMAN, OP:"

Most anything else I just note in brackets, like "BATMAN (weak):" or "BATMAN (quiet)"

Makes perfect sense. As a;ways, appreciate your helpful two cents with this. Always happy to take any advice from those who’ve been at this longer than I have.

My pleasure! But really, I might be in the minority with how I do things. I learned script formatting from reading Matt's SEX CRIMINALS scripts, but a lot of people use (VO) for captions. Like in this standardized script:

Wow, just wow. So much help from you, it means the world, Chip. Seriously. Thanks so much.

I’m still fine tuning it, but when I complete my final revisions, I would love nothing more than to send you a copy of what I have been working on on, just as one fan to another of comics, if that’s at all possible, for your reading pleasure. Figure you spend so much time writing for others it might be nice to let you read something for your leisure.

If not, for legal reasons, completely understand.

any zdarsky book is improved by the addition of a grouchy old man

sometimes the grouchy old man ... is me

I start to see some pattern here, Newburn, Public Domain all base on grouchy old man. I think we need to bring back Alfred Pennyworth, just so that he can be the grouchy old man for Batman.

Hey Chip! I just wanna say thank you for writing an AVENGERS title that finally made me GET the Avengers. I've always been a Justice League and X-Men guy. The kinda espionage/military theme of the Avengers never really spoke to me until I decided to give Twilight a go. This version of Steve finally made me LIKE Captain America, which is something I've been struggling to do since Steve took the mantle back from Sam. This feels substantial, like we're gonna look back on it in a few years the same way we do THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. It's not often a comic makes me feel its impact as I'm reading the first issue, but this felt special.

Also, anyone who complained about Daredevil has an inability to recognize peak fiction and requires treatment.

My family conspired to keep me from reading Avengers Twilight last week but in related news Marco killed it on Ultimate Spider-Man. And there was even a Father Murdoch! That Hickman fella, bet he gives great advice!

Also excited for the next Newburn. Still one of the best books I read.

Oh yeah, Marco is AMAZING on that book! I only feel a little jealous of Hickman!!!!!!!

Seriously. Of course, Marco makes NYC apartments look like a spread in one of those glossy home decor magazines. (Also, Ultimate journalists must make some ultimate scratch to afford those NYC apartments!)

Oh no! I did not want your volume 7 DD cap to end Chip.

May you come back to Marvel to write Howard the Duck (again), Matt “Oh No!” Murdock (again), and whomever else you want in less than five years Chip. Along with writing/drawing other comic things (I miss you & Marco working together), and cultivating your beard.

Speaking of Matt, AT SPOILERS here but I was so sad curmudgeon, cranky, lawyer of the people Matt died in AT. So I guess there was a clause in your Marvel contracts that if you write Matt Murdock you must kill him?!?

While on the subject of your DD (which you know I love!) last year you mentioned you might share Marco’s initial design(s) for King Daredevil. Um, could you please? And thank you.

More Avengers Twilight:

I love Old Steve too. Have to admit I am a little spooked by seeing some Marvel parallels to the unsettling and embarrassing fringe elements in the AT U.S.

Also, I want that descendant of a certain futurist to be flushed, so thanks for such a riveting opening issue. Daniel’s art is terrific.

And speaking of art, Kagan’s Kaptara pieces are awesome.

Thanks for sharing those script samples too. Very cool. I am still hoping Marvel includes your DD #1 script in the upcoming omnibus.

Oh no! My lunch break is over. Thanks for making it fun Chip. Enjoy your week.

Yes! Funny enough, I was going to post Marco's costume designs today but came across my Summit pitch while looking for them so posted them instead!

Thanks Kim!

YAY! Grated minds and all that. ;) Thanks, Chip.

I’m still laughing way too hard about “Oh No!” I will never think of this the same way again.

I love how much 5 years later Chip aged.

Thanks for the insight! I love hearing about changes to writer's plans and what would or almost happened.
