Wow...what’s left to say about the man that hasn’t already been said? He was a pioneer, a legend, a Titan, and his contributions to the genre will be lorded as being among the most influential in the canon of comics and Super Heroes.
I never had the pleasure to meet the man. And he now joins a list of other legends I have missed the chance to meet before they passed. I’m determined that he will be the last one.
I also hope that JR and the family are handling the loss as best as they can. For as much as we are all hurting, they r the ones suffering the absolute most.
It’s sort of funny, how the right person passing, can bring people from all corners of the globe together in mourning, even as many of us have never even met him in person. That’s the power of a legend. And to quote one of my favorite coming of age films from my childhood:
LOVE IT. Enjoyed hearing about Uni-Squad on In The Bleed and glad to get a look at him. It's cool that you still have it (though given the signature why the heck wouldn't you?)!
I read a bunch of Romita Sr. comics recently for the first time (as an adult), Spider-Man and Daredevil, and it's amazing to see what his form and style brought to those characters/books. Ditko was amazing, but he brought a whole different vibe.
Seriously. Said that several times in the past couple years. FWIW, thanks for what you do, it definitely rekindles that fire and fun. Don't go anywhere.
Thank you for sharing that memory. You're Dad sounds like he was pretty cool when you were growing up!! Reading it brought back the time when I bought my issue that I still have.
David Haller watch out, Uni Squad is coming for your gigs. Looking forward to some Uni Squad substack comics, it’s what John would’ve wanted - I’m sure of it.
Sweet story, Chip. He was a great man.
What a fantastic story, what a fantastic memory.
Aw, thanks, Kelly. Wish I could have met him again as an adult!

“Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die.”
A perfect story, especially your dad's questions. Looking forward to Uni-Squad's arrival in Gotham City.
UNI-SQUAD is the arch enemy of TWO-FACE obviously
This is a great, heartfelt post, so thanks for that. I'm going to restrain myself and not ask how many men you like inside of you... Thanks Chip!
Good stuff, Chip!
What a lovely tribute!!
thanks mommy! I still feel bad for dad having to drive us into Toronto that day!

Great story, memory and artifact! Never had such an opportunity to meet him, but his work was what drew me in.
I wish I had the opportunity to meet him again, years later, to properly thank him.

Hey Chip -- ditto. Just want to echo what Truman said. Thanks a ton for making all this fun.

My dad was NOT cool, but he was really supportive of me and my brother's interests!

it was a deliberate choice to ignore the dash
I FIGURED AS MUCH
Is it just me or does the Uni-Squad logo hold up pretty well?
hm yes i've always been a fan of timeless design
Man, what a legend. Seems like everyone’s got a story like this about him. He’ll be sorely missed.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful memory, Chip. Romita’s Spidey is the best!
This made me emotional, wasn't expecting that after the "eight men inside of him" tangent. Uni-Squad limited series when?
I hope to one day reflect on my 20 year old self bringing Chip, like, 30 pages of a comic, shaking in my boots, with such heartfelt emotion.
RIP to one of the greats. There will never be another artist John Romita Sr.
UNI-SQUAD 4EVER
That's crazy. He never felt bad doing it. He loved your enthusiasm.
