Hey Chip, this is a question I’ve wanted to ask for a while now. Usually you always refer to yourself as “dumb” and “bad at your job”, but in recent years, it is hard to deny that you have written critically acclaimed books that are loved and annoyed by fans and critics alike. As new fans get into comics, and younger fans mature and become more seasoned, have you ever genuinely thought about the fact that now or in the near future some of these fans may refer to your runs on books as “their favorite, “definitive”, or even that some may refer to you as “their favorite writer”? Sorry to drop that bomb on you, but it’s something I’ve wanted to ask for a little bit now. I hope you have a great week!
here's a question that will seem like a real question until the end or somewhere in the middle (like now) where i reveal that it's mostly (if not entirely, or really it's up to you how much) a joke question:
have you ever considered referring to "clickbait" as "CHIPbait"?
thank you for your time
love,
myq (a guy who signs his internet comments like letters sometimes like now)
lol. Gosh damn this newsletter continues to delivery greatness day in and day out. I actually unsubscribed to some of the other comic writers/artists out there from the giant move to Substack that was last year i think? Anywho, I made damn sure to keep this subscription going! Thanks as always!
Comics are also a tough medium for the “should I still read ‘canceled’ writers’ work” conundrum because there are other co-creators typically involved. Like the artists put in a zillion hours of brilliant work and then their stuff gets tossed because the writer did something awful.
And frankly at this point so many people have effed up it’s hard to keep track of “who/what/how bad?” to the point where it’s confusing. My boyfriend didn’t want to read the very-delightful Isola because he conflated the writer with one of his past co-creators from a former project. It’s a lot.
Personally, in comics, I still read whatever looks good (which is a qualification that thankfully won’t make me accidentally buy any future Ethan Van Sciver thing).
I could see it. Shit I bet you could write the movie while acting in it Chip 😂.
Speaking of clickbait, I just saw on one Norah Winter’s website, Threats and Menaces, that apparently one Matt Murdock, currently supposedly deceased, was seen talking with an Angel before the train carrying his ex-girlfriend, Kristen mcduffie, blew up.
Any comments on these clearly outrageous articles 🌝
I’m DEFINITELY not a daily bugle reporter on the trail of the supposedly dead Matt Murdock, who I have reason to not only be alive, but is also the masked vigilante. Definitely not that type of person.
Also any truth to the rumors that the same angel that talked to Matt Murdock, allegedly, was the same one talking with bullseye apparently during the recent NYC lockdown not too long ago?
And yet how can we believe your promises of Substack refunds when you would lie to us about Marvel casting news, hmmm Chip??? Didn't think THAT ONE through!
Appreciate you getting the refund sorted out so quickly Chip 🙂 As a kind gesture; would you be willing to toss an insult to my best mate Matt who's getting married on Monday next week? I'm doing the best man speech and would love to throw down a Zdarsky comment if you'd be willing. He's an ap developer who gave Sex Criminals 6/10 at our book group 👀
Ah, yes, Matt. The guy who gave Sex Criminals a 6/10 because he was hoping it focused more on the "Criminals" part because "sex is icky and no one can do it well."
If the actual FF role doesn't work out, maybe you can star in the inevitable porn knock-off? "Get in the rocket, chums. *winks slyly at camera* The sex rocket."

Ha! I'll answer this in an upcoming newsletter!
I know I'm not the only one with a comic book divider labeled "Chip Zdarsky" in their long boxes and buys anything with Chip's name on it...
Me too!! ✋🏻
Chip IS my favorite comics writer (and artist).
DEAL WITH IT CHIP. WE ADORE YOU. 🖤😘
you're all crazy!!!!!!!
I second that emotion!

hmm I think you're on to something...
Love that Margaret Atwood reads the same book that I did whenever I got bored of studying her book in class, makes me feel a bit more justified.

Aw, thanks Isaac! I know there are a lot of places out there vying for your time and money, so I appreciate it!

FAKE NEWS!!!
Can I quote you on that? Come on, u can trust me.

Asking for a friend...no seriously...a friend...

Haaaaaaa. Perfection. Best $70 soon to be $40 I ever spent 😂 Many thanks.
Just want to say you’re killing it on Daredevil and The Knight. Giving Matt a beard, stroke of genius!
haha thanks! BEARDS 4 ALL
Great advice about finding your own line/listening to your gut. it's a tough call.
Also, looking forward to you saying Reed's famous catch-phrase "To me, my X-Men!"
Hey Chip, my refund just showed up, thanks for dealing with the hassle!
Ah! Excellent! Thanks for letting me know!
Classic Marg!

Hey chip, do you have any tips for printing a book? Are there any surprises you discovered when printing some of your early books?
Hey Chip! YOUR MOM
…is cool (clickbait)
wow
(TRUE)
That Margaret Atwood picture just opened my third eye
