It’s that most magical time of year: SAN DIEGO COMIC CON! I am not there.
I actually wish I was! A comic con without the big Hollywood presence sounds quite nice. I’m sick of constantly finding myself stuck in line at the bar behind Don Cheadle, Nathan Fillion, etc.
But, in a sense, I WILL be there as my dear editor and Chipclass graduate Allison O’Toole is going!
If you see Allison at the show, be very respectful of her as she can be quite mean. And if you have a Chip comic on your person she is legally allowed to sign it as me.

Allison will also be attending the Eisner Awards, a seven-hour extravaganza of suits, gowns and cargo shorts. I have written over twenty acceptance speeches for her to give in case the “write-in votes” actually get counted. I will update this newsletter on Saturday either from a place of victory or a place of defeat.
STAY TUNED!!
In other news, this week HARLEY QUINN: BLACK + WHITE + REDDER #1 came out, with the very pretty story drawn by Kevin Maguire and written by li’l ol’ me! This was fun to do and, as always, I’m just wildly jazzed to see more perfect Maguire expressions:
I literally traced his work as a teenager! What a life, man. What a life.
Also this week I finally got to read issue one of THE CULL by Friend Of The Stack KELLY THOMPSON and the amazing MATTIA DE IULIS! It’s a perfect first issue, pulling you into a mystery with absolute style. Kelly is one of the smartest writers in the biz, Mattia is one of the best artists, and combined (again!) they show us all how to create scenes that tell so much without exposition dumping, which is harder than it looks! Geniuses!
It’s a really beautiful book on every level. Everyone’s going to want this, trust me.
In BATMAN news, I just finished writing the first post-GOTHAM WAR issue and it’s a doozy. Can’t wait to see what Jorge does with it.
And check out this spoiler-free bit of pencil work from Mike Hawthorne from GOTHAM WAR! He’s so damned good. This panel is, like, three inches by three inches because he’s a maniac. I need to write an issue where someone has removed all the windows from Gotham though so he can rest his hand a bit.
Okay! That’s it!
LOVE YOU BYE
Also on a serious note, Newburn really is incredible I recently reread it after watching Justified again to get ready for primeval and it made me realize how much it feels like an Elmore Leonard novel... Is that at all intentional?
Thanks so much, Chip. Means a lot. <3
