This past month the Krakoan Age of the X-Men comics ended. There were some truly amazing books that came out of this period, all kicked off by Mr. Jonathan Hickman and his big ideas back in 2019.
Now, I had almost nothing to do with this line of books. I worked on one miniseries, X-MEN/FANTASTIC FOUR, which wasn’t even technically in the X-Office. But I was part of the famed X-Slack for a bit and got to witness the camaraderie of the creative people involved and it was almost heartwarming for this cold-blooded Canadian. So, a couple of years later, when it was revealed that Hickman would be stepping away from the line, myself and famed X-writer Gerry Duggan wanted to do something special for him.
Thanks, Rob! Here’s hoping Jon goes on to make some great comics!
Speaking of Mr. Gerry Duggan, I got to draw a cover for his amazing new Image series, FALLING IN LOVE ON THE PATH TO HELL!
Look, it’s samurai and gunslingers and … love?? It’s basically made for me! All illustrated beautifully by Garry Brown. My cover is a variant for issue two, so don’t forget to hunt it down in a couple of weeks if you’re a CHIPLETIONIST!
I DON’T THINK THAT’S A THING AND ALSO IT SOUNDS A LITTLE DIRTY
Damn right
I also did a cover for a new DSTLRY book called THE MISSIONARY!
I didn’t realize it was for Ryan Stegman until I went to put the text on it. But by then it was too late. Anyway, fun book. Great art (Ryan’s writing it).
Today the hardcover collection of BATMAN/CATWOMAN: THE GOTHAM WAR is out! It’s our big, fun crossover in one easy to read place! For BATMAN readers, this is essentially CHIPPY Z’S BATMAN VOLUME 3 so it’s essential for the run!
And look! They made Catwoman shiny!
This was an incredibly fun time on the book, getting to plot out some big swings with my dear, old friend Tini Howard. Check it out if you like moral conundrums, sexy shenanigans and aristocratic cavemen!
Also today, ABSOLUTE POWER: GROUND ZERO #1 is out! I helped out with one of the stories, filling in the gaps between Failsafe’s demise in BATMAN and his part in ABSOLUTE POWER! If you’re curious as to what’s transpired, pick it up!

So, in last week’s newsletter I talked a bit about James Tynion’s TINY ONION company and how my new company BIG ONION was going to do cool things as well. Well, I got a cease and desist from James’ lawyers, stating that the own the trademark for the following:
TINY ONION
BIG ONION
MEDIUM ONION
FUNION
ONION, INNIT (U.K. ™ only)
BATONION (?)
THE (REAL) ONION
ZDARSCO, INC.
The last one really caught me by surprise and now I have to dissolve my Canadian corporation, which sucks. As a result of my trademark violation, I now need to “hype up” James’ new DC book, THE NICE HOUSE BY THE SEA with Álvaro Martínez Bueno and Jordie Bellaire. I read the first issue and, honestly, even if I wasn’t legally required to do so, I gotta say this is amazing. Breathtakingly beautiful with perfectly realized characters. It’s a sequel to THE NICE HOUSE ON THE LAKE and does a nice swerve from the original and you’re absolutely going to want to read issue two. It’s FOC’ing on Monday so tell your retailer you want it or I might go to prison!!
And I … think that’s it for me this week? Now excuse me, I need to go chiplete something.

Chip, you're such a legend. That Rob video had me cackling.
That Liefeld video idea might be one of your best yet, and hot take: Good for Rob having such sincere enthusiasm in that video. That video really explains a lot about Jonathan's Ultimate Spider-Man run, to be honest...
